ZZ Top's sixth studio album Deguello, originally released in November of 1979, marking the band's first release on Warner Bros. Records after returning from a two-year hiatus. During their time away, guitarist Billy Gibbons spent time in Europe where he discovered punk music, influences of which seeped into the album's creation. The album title translates to "slashing of the throat" or "no quarter" in Spanish, referencing a bugle call used at the Battle of the Alamo. This Rhino High Fidelity pressing releases October 31, 2025, as part of the Rocktober campaign, AAA cut from the original stereo master tapes by mastering engineer Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Optimal.
The 10-track collection marked the first time ZZ Top featured cover versions on a studio album, including "I Thank You" by Isaac Hayes and David Porter, and "Dust My Broom," originally by Robert Johnson. Classic tracks "Cheap Sunglasses" and "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" became rock radio staples, showcasing the band's Texas blues-rock swagger. Gibbons experimented with new technology after seeing a pitch shifter used on The Phil Donahue Show, incorporating the effect on vocals and guitars for songs like "Manic Mechanic." The album features the band playing saxophones on tracks like "She Loves My Automobile" and "Hi Fi Mama," adding unexpected texture to their signature sound.
This Rhino High Fidelity edition features heavyweight gatefold packaging and includes an exclusive insert with insights from Billy F Gibbons in a Q&A with James Austin. The 180-gram pressing delivers enhanced clarity and depth, with Kevin Gray's AAA mastering from the original stereo tapes ensuring optimal sound quality. The platinum-selling album re-ignited ZZ Top's career and introduced the band to a new radio audience, making this audiophile reissue a significant addition for serious collectors.
