Tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter assembled a remarkable quintet for Speak No Evil, joining Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Herbie Hancock on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in December 1964, the album contains six Shorter compositions that move between hard-driving improvisation and restrained ballads. His writing gives the horns distinct melodies while leaving the rhythm section room to respond.
"Witch Hunt" opens with a memorable horn theme before Shorter and Hubbard stretch into extended solos. "Fee-Fi-Fo-Fum" moves through a playful melody with shifting rhythmic accents, while "Dance Cadaverous" slows the pace for a more deliberate exchange between saxophone and trumpet. The title track, "Speak No Evil," returns to a brisk, swinging pulse. "Infant Eyes," written for Shorter's daughter, is the album's tender ballad, and "Wild Flower" closes with a flowing melody and lively ensemble playing.
Shorter recorded Speak No Evil after joining Miles Davis' quintet, drawing on the harmonic freedom and group interaction that marked his writing. Every composition is his own, from the suspenseful opening of "Witch Hunt" to the lyrical melody of "Infant Eyes." The Blue Note Essential Vinyl Series pressing uses 140g black vinyl mastered from high-resolution digital sources.
