"The Wizard and I" gives Erivo an early statement of Elphaba's ambition, building from private hope toward a large ensemble finish. Grande handles the comic timing and rapid vocal turns of "Popular," while "What Is This Feeling?" turns the two leads' mutual dislike into a brisk duet with overlapping lines. Jonathan Bailey leads the extended "Dancing Through Life," moving among Fiyero, Boq, Nessarose, Glinda, and Elphaba before the story reaches its emotional break in Erivo and Grande's "Defying Gravity."

Elphaba and Glinda move from rivalry at Shiz University toward a friendship shaped by romance, status, and the Wizard's deception. "I'm Not That Girl" addresses unreturned love, "One Short Day" follows their arrival in the Emerald City, and "Something Bad" reveals the campaign against Oz's Animals. Elphaba ultimately rejects the role chosen for her and accepts the consequences.
