U2's eighth studio album Zooropa emerged in the middle of the Zoo TV Tour, transforming from a planned EP into a fully realized album recorded in just six weeks. Produced by Flood, Brian Eno, and the Edge, it was released on July 5, 1993, on Island Records, inspired by the band's experiences on the Zoo TV Tour and expanding on themes of technology and media oversaturation. Originally intended as an EP to promote the "Zooropa" leg of the tour, during the sessions the group decided to extend the record to a full-length album. The Edge received his first production credit on a U2 record for the extra level of responsibility he assumed. The album topped charts in 17 countries and won the Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, though it remains one of U2's most underrated releases. This 30th Anniversary edition on transparent yellow vinyl coincides with the band's groundbreaking 2023 performances at the Sphere in Las Vegas.
The title track "Zooropa" opens with atmospheric electronica before building to a declaration of European identity. "Numb" features the Edge on lead vocals, while "Lemon" showcases the band's embrace of electronic dance music. "Stay (Faraway, So Close!)" became the album's most successful single, reaching the top five in multiple countries. "Babyface" and "Daddy's Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car" demonstrate U2's experimental edge with sampling and unconventional structures. "Some Days Are Better Than Others" and "The First Time" offer introspective moments, while "Dirty Day" explores father-son relationships with raw emotion. The closer "The Wanderer" features Johnny Cash on vocals, creating a haunting meditation on spiritual searching. This anniversary edition includes bonus remixes: "Lemon (The Perfecto Mix)" and "Numb (Gimme Some More Dignity Mix)."
This 30th Anniversary pressing features transparent yellow vinyl across two LPs, housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket with metallic foil board. The gatefold includes a newly added photo of the band by renowned photographer Anton Corbijn from 1993. The pressing uses the 2018 remaster, delivering enhanced clarity while preserving the album's original experimental spirit. The original album tracks span three sides, with the fourth side dedicated to the two bonus remixes. This limited edition pressing celebrates an album that captured U2 at their most adventurous, willing to risk commercial expectations in pursuit of artistic exploration.
