The Postal Service's Give Up stands as the only album from the electronic duo consisting of Death Cab for Cutie's Ben Gibbard and producer Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel), released by Sub Pop. This 2014 reissue uses the 10th anniversary remastered tapes, released alongside the documentary Everything Will Change. The album is a long-distance collaboration between Gibbard, who lived in Seattle, Washington, and Tamborello, who resided in Los Angeles, California. The duo named the project for their working method: the pair would send demos on burned CD-Rs through the mail, adding elements until songs were complete. Additional vocals on the record are provided by Jen Wood and Rilo Kiley's Jenny Lewis. This black vinyl pressing includes a printed insert.
The result is a charming, largely electronic album with a warmth not typically associated with the clicks-and-beeps set. The ten-track collection features breakthrough single "Such Great Heights," the opening track "The District Sleeps Alone Tonight," and fan favorite "We Will Become Silhouettes." "Nothing Better" showcases the chemistry between Gibbard and Jenny Lewis on dueling vocals, while "Clark Gable" demonstrates the project's gift for merging melancholic lyrics with uplifting melodies. "Recycled Air," "Sleeping In," and "Brand New Colony" balance introspective songwriting with infectious electronic production. The album closes with "Natural Anthem," cementing the record's reputation for blending indie rock sensibilities with glitch electronica.
By the end of its first decade, Give Up had sold 1.2 million copies in the U.S., making it Sub Pop's second-biggest selling album in its history. This remastered edition captures the same sonic clarity from the 10th anniversary release, preserving the intricate electronic textures and Gibbard's emotive vocals with enhanced fidelity. The pressing delivers the warmth and detail that made this bedroom project a cultural phenomenon, from the gentle pulse of drum machines to the shimmering synth layers. Pitchfork placed Give Up at number 104 on its list of the 200 best albums of the 2000s, while Rolling Stone ranked it as the decade's 86th best album. This reissue offers a chance to experience one of indie electronic music's defining statements.
