Brooklyn storytelling, dark humor, and street-life accounts run through The Notorious B.I.G.'s debut, Ready To Die. Originally released in 1994, the album follows Christopher Wallace from childhood memories and neighborhood hustles to fame, distrust, and thoughts of suicide. His conversational delivery shifts between detailed narratives and radio-ready hooks, while production by Easy Mo Bee, DJ Premier, and others draws on soul and funk samples.
"Juicy" recounts Biggie's move from poverty to success over a soul sample, while "Big Poppa" leans into relaxed party storytelling. "Gimme The Loot" stages a robbery through two contrasting voices performed by Biggie himself, and "Warning" follows a tip about a robbery. "The What" pairs him with Method Man for a back-and-forth exchange, while "Everyday Struggle" describes the daily pressures and consequences of dealing drugs. The shifts in subject and delivery give each performance a distinct identity.
The album's autobiographical writing draws on Biggie's Brooklyn upbringing and its risks. Its opening skit traces his childhood and adolescence, while "Suicidal Thoughts" brings the central narrative to a grim conclusion. This 30th Anniversary Edition features newly reimagined alternate cover art and a gatefold jacket, with all 19 tracks spread across two separate vinyl discs.
