The Mountain Goats approach Days through full-band indie rock arrangements that pair John Darnielle's narrative songwriting with piano, horns, acoustic guitar, and layered backing vocals. Produced by John Congleton at Sear Sound in Manhattan, the twelve-song album began as a proposed companion to Goths before widening into a set connected by music, memory, and cultural touchstones from the 1970s through the 1990s, with most songs written in major keys.
"Charlie Sheen Reaches Out to the Feds" moves on a driving rhythm with prominent horns, while "Candlebox" adds guest vocals from Matt Nathanson. "Annie Haslam Imperial Phase" shifts toward funky bass, jazzy keyboards, and new wave accents, and "Going to Fennario" brings Mikaela Davis into the arrangement on harp. The title track slows into a gentler indie-pop sway, while "Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums" uses piano and layered backing vocals to broaden the album's closing stretch before "Last Day."
The sessions feature Rob Jost on bass and French horn, with group vocals from Catherine Russell, Jamie Leonhart, and Carolyn Leonhart. Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer adds harmonies to "Hidden Majesty of Later Venom Albums." This pink vinyl record contains the complete twelve-track album on pink colored vinyl in a single-LP configuration for this release.
