Howard Shore's score for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers deepens the musical journey through Middle-earth with increased complexity and expanded thematic material. Released on December 10, 2002, the score was composed, orchestrated, and conducted by Shore, and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Voices, and the London Oratory School Schola. This limited Indie Exclusive edition on Palantir Clear vinyl presents the second chapter of the trilogy in a gatefold double LP configuration. The album was certified gold in the U.S., the U.K., and Canada and won the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album.
New themes emerge for the Rohirrim and the Ents, delivering some of the trilogy's boldest orchestral moments. Key pieces include "Glamdring," which opens with the epic battle between Gandalf and the Balrog, "The Last March of the Ents," and "Forth Eorlingas," which features the Hardanger fiddle alongside brass proclamations. Emiliana Torrini performed "Gollum's Song," which closes the album with a haunting portrait of the character's tormented psyche. The score features solo performances from Isabel Bayrakdarian, Sheila Chandra, Elizabeth Fraser, and Ben Del Maestro, adding vocal textures that complement the orchestral and choral forces. Shore's composition seamlessly blends existing themes from The Fellowship of the Ring with new material that reflects the darkening world and converging cultures.
The Palantir Clear vinyl pressing captures the score's dynamic range across four sides in a gatefold package. The format allows Shore's intricate orchestrations to breathe, from intimate character moments to the massive battle sequences that define this middle chapter. This Indie Exclusive limited edition offers a visually distinctive presentation of Shore's Grammy-winning work, maintaining clarity through both the delicate solo performances and the full orchestral power.
