Howard Shore's score for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released on November 20, 2001, composed, orchestrated, and conducted by Shore himself, performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the London Voices, and London Oratory School Schola choir. This limited Indie Exclusive edition on Palantir Clear vinyl captures the opening chapter of Peter Jackson's epic trilogy in a gatefold double LP pressing. The soundtrack won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, the Grammy Award for Best Score Soundtrack Album, and the World Soundtrack Award for Best Original Soundtrack, while achieving platinum certification in the U.S.
The 18-track album includes iconic pieces such as "Concerning Hobbits," which establishes the pastoral Celtic theme of the Shire, "Many Meetings," and "The Bridge of Khazad-dum," the latter capturing Gandalf's confrontation with the Balrog in one of Shore's most dramatic compositions. The album features two original songs by Enya: "Aniron (Theme for Aragorn and Arwen)" nestled within "The Council of Elrond," and the beloved "May It Be," which closes the album. Elizabeth Fraser performs the "Lament for Gandalf" within the "Lothlorien" track, while Edward Ross delivers the haunting "In Dreams" during "The Breaking of the Fellowship." The album is a reduction of over three and a half hours of finalized music written for The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Palantir Clear vinyl pressing spreads Shore's intricate score across four sides within a gatefold jacket, allowing the orchestral dynamics and delicate solo performances to translate effectively to the analog format. The clear vinyl adds a distinctive visual element appropriate to this Indie Exclusive limited edition. The pressing maintains the balance between Shore's intimate character themes, from the whimsical Shire motifs to the ethereal Rivendell sequences, and the epic orchestral forces that accompany the Fellowship's perilous journey.
