Cincinnati-born, Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Brittney Parks steps into her boldest creative phase with The BPM, her third studio album as Sudan Archives released October 17, 2025, via Stones Throw Records. Following the critical and commercial success of 2022's Natural Brown Prom Queen, Parks evolved from hands-on DIY artist to executive producer, working with close collaborators including her sister, cousin, and best friend alongside producers Ben Dickey, Eric Terhune, and D-Composed. Recorded in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Detroit, the album draws inspiration from her parents' roots in Michigan and Illinois, blending club sounds from both cities with Jersey club, experimental beatwork, and global dance music influences. This indie exclusive limited edition features Red vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket.
Parks introduces her new alter ego Gadget Girl, a technologically advanced persona that embodies hyper-independence and self-exploration through gadgets and machines. Standout singles "Dead," "My Type," and "Ms. Pac Man" showcase her evolution, with "Dead" opening the album as a dancefloor anthem built on stacked violin melodies, string loops, and breakbeats. "My Type" marks her first foray into rap territory with flirty, corny energy, while "Ms. Pac Man" references 1980s arcade culture. "Come and Find You" delivers a shuffling mid-tempo ballad, "A Bug's Life" rides spacious house beats with clean piano chords, and the title track arrives late in the sequence as a giddy dancehall number containing the album's thesis: "The BPM is the power." Throughout 15 tracks, Parks navigates themes of mental illness, self-love, technology, romance, and heartbreak with vulnerability and confidence.
This double vinyl pressing on Red indie exclusive vinyl captures the full dynamic range of Parks' most club-forward work, housed in a gatefold jacket with OBI strip and printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics. The pressing maintains clarity across Parks' intricate violin work, drum programming, bass, synthesizers, and vocals, while showcasing contributions from collaborators on keyboards, percussion, and ensemble arrangements. The album straddles house, techno, trap, and R&B in ways that feel unbound and genre-defying, proving that dance music can be both physically freeing and emotionally complex.
