Steve Martin had been honing his singularly silly stand-up act for a decade before the world truly caught on. Released in 1978, A Wild and Crazy Guy reached number two on Billboard's Pop Albums Chart and was eventually certified double platinum. The album won the Grammy Award in 1979 for Best Comedy Album, and in 2015, it was deemed culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry. The album format reflects Martin's meteoric rise: the first half was performed in front of a small audience at The Boarding House in San Francisco, while the second half captured him at Red Rocks Amphitheatre performing for 10,000 screaming fans. This Start Your Ear Off Right 2026 indie exclusive black vinyl pressing celebrates one of comedy's most important live albums.
Martin's comic persona was itself a put-on, a layered deconstruction of showbiz and stand-up that required his audience to perform a demanding mental calculus, all while the white-suited, bunny-eared Martin performed some of the most outwardly silly schtick imaginable. The album contains the hit novelty single "King Tut," backed up by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band performing under the name the Toot Uncommons. Martin reprises his role as Georg, one of the Czech Festrunk Brothers he popularized with Dan Aykroyd on Saturday Night Live, on tracks like the second half of "A Wild and Crazy Guy" and "You Naive Americans." Other standout tracks include "Philosophy/Religion/College/Language," "Cat Handcuffs," and the revelatory "My Real Name," where Martin admits his name is the sound of him flipping his lips. The album captures comedy's smartest absurdist at the exact moment he became a superstar.
The persona of a smug, incompetent, obnoxious narcissist was considered apolitical at the time, but Martin's act transcended simple comedy. Dan Aykroyd admired Martin's ability to write comedy that was both relatable and smart, noting he always pointed high above the brows of his audience. The switchover between venues is handled in a segue in the opening minute of the track "A Wild and Crazy Guy," where Steve reads a bogus financial disclosure report to the intimate Boarding House crowd, and when he calculates concert revenues, the audience reaction suddenly changes to the raucous open amphitheater of Red Rocks. This pressing preserves that remarkable sonic shift from intimate club to stadium spectacle. By this point, Steve Martin is a comedy rock star, and this album documents the transformation in real time.
