Few albums have crossed genre boundaries quite like Getz/Gilberto. Recorded in New York in March 1963 and released on Verve Records, the collaboration between tenor saxophonist Stan Getz and Brazilian guitarist and vocalist João Gilberto, with Antonio Carlos Jobim on piano, became the record that introduced bossa nova to a mass American audience. It won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1965, the first jazz album ever to do so, and "The Girl from Ipanema" took Record of the Year alongside it.
Eight tracks of unhurried, swaying bliss define the album's mood. "The Girl from Ipanema" remains one of the most instantly recognizable recordings in jazz history, with Astrud Gilberto's vocal entrance and Getz's fluid tenor solo making it essential listening. "Desafinado" showcases Joao Gilberto's remarkable harmonic command, while "Corcovado" brings Astrud back for one of the album's most dreamily melancholic moments. Jobim wrote or co-wrote seven of the eight tracks, and his understated piano presence ties the whole record together.
This Verve Acoustic Sounds Series pressing was mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound under the supervision of Acoustic Sounds founder Chad Kassem, pressed on 180-gram vinyl, and packaged in a hi-gloss gatefold jacket with a reinforced inner sleeve. The stereo separation is precise and well-balanced, with bass and percussion on one channel, guitar and piano on the other, and Getz's tenor centered throughout.
