Snoop Doggy Dogg's debut studio album Doggystyle was released on November 23, 1993, by Death Row and Interscope Records. The album was recorded and produced following Snoop Doggy Dogg's appearances on Dr. Dre's debut solo album The Chronic (1992), to which Snoop contributed significantly. Recorded in early 1993 at Death Row Studios with Dr. Dre producing, the album became one of the most anticipated debuts in hip-hop history. Doggystyle sold over 800,000 units in its first week, making it the biggest-selling debut album and fastest-selling hip-hop album ever at the time. This 30th Anniversary clear vinyl edition restores the original 1993 track listing in a gatefold package, including the previously omitted track "Gz Up, Hoes Down" for the first time since the album's initial pressing.
Dr. Dre's distinctive sounds helped introduce the hip-hop subgenre of G-funk to a mainstream audience, bringing forward West Coast hip-hop as a dominant force in the early-mid 1990s. Lead single "Who Am I? (What's My Name?)" established Snoop's smooth, conversational flow over Dre's layered production. "Gin and Juice" became a cultural phenomenon with its laid-back party vibe, while "Murder Was the Case" features baroque production that contrasts with the album's sunnier moments. "Doggy Dogg World" includes contributions from Kurupt, Daz Dillinger of Tha Dogg Pound, and harmonies from The Dramatics, while tracks like "Lodi Dodi" and "Tha Shiznit" showcase Snoop's distinctive vocal stylings. The restored "Gz Up, Hoes Down" and "Gz and Hustlas" complete the original vision of the album that earned quadruple Platinum certification.
This double clear vinyl pressing captures the warmth and depth of Dre's G-funk production across four sides in a gatefold jacket. The format allows the intricate layering of Parliament-Funkadelic samples, live instrumentation, and synthesizers to breathe while preserving Snoop's laconic drawl and melodic flow. Mixed and mastered for maximum sonic impact, this 30th Anniversary edition offers both longtime listeners and newcomers the definitive version of the album that launched Snoop's solo career and helped define the sound of Los Angeles.
