Rihanna's seventh studio album Unapologetic was originally released in November 2012 as her most personal and sonically adventurous work to date. The album marked a historic milestone as her first number one debut on the Billboard 200, moving 238,000 copies in its opening week, her strongest sales performance yet. Recorded between June and November 2012 while simultaneously promoting her previous album Talk That Talk, the 14-track collection won the Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2014 ceremony, giving Rihanna her seventh Grammy and first win in an album category. The album's title reflected her uncompromising honesty, with Rihanna explaining that she named it Unapologetic because "there is only one truth, and you can't apologize for that." Working with producers including The-Dream, David Guetta, Mike WiLL Made-It, and Sia, Rihanna crafted an album that fearlessly blended EDM, dubstep, R&B, and dance-pop into what critics called "brutish and bruised" production.
Lead single "Diamonds," written by Sia, became Rihanna's 12th number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, tying her with Madonna and the Supremes. The midtempo ballad's anthemic chorus and massive production marked a departure from her usual uptempo lead singles. "Stay," featuring Mikky Ekko, showcased Rihanna's emotional vulnerability over sparse piano accompaniment, while "Pour It Up," produced by Mike WiLL Made-It, brought Southern hip-hop minimalism and strip club energy to pop radio. Other standouts include "Numb" with Eminem, their first collaboration since "Love the Way You Lie," "Right Now" featuring David Guetta's guttural production, and "Nobody's Business" with Chris Brown, which interpolates Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make Me Feel" into a disco-house celebration. The theatrical "Love Without Tragedy/Mother Mary" demonstrated Rihanna's range with its sweeping, cinematic scope reminiscent of Kim Carnes' "Bette Davis Eyes."
This double LP black vinyl pressing houses the album's full 14-track runtime in a gatefold jacket. The format preserves the album's stark, layered production across both discs, from the abrasive sound effects and eccentric beats to Rihanna's dynamic vocal performances. With worldwide sales exceeding four million copies and ranking as the ninth global best-selling album of 2012 according to IFPI, Unapologetic solidified Rihanna's position as one of pop's most fearless voices. The album spawned six singles and spent 60 weeks on the Billboard 200, proving that commercial success and artistic risk-taking aren't mutually exclusive.
