Primus' third studio album debuted at number seven on the Billboard 200 in April 1993, a surprising chart position for a band that bassist Les Claypool described as unsuitable for radio play. The band self-produced the 15-track album in their Sacramento rehearsal space, purchasing recording equipment with their advance money and working with engineers Ron Rigler and Derek Featherstone.
The album achieved gold certification in September 1993 and platinum status in May 1997, selling over half a million copies during the alternative rock explosion of the mid-1990s. Singles "My Name Is Mud" and "Mr. Krinkle" received MTV rotation, with the former becoming the album's most recognizable track.
The collection showcases Claypool's signature bass work alongside Larry LaLonde's experimental guitar textures and Tim Alexander's percussion, including the all-percussion instrumental "Wounded Knee." Tracks like "Bob," "DMV," and "Nature Boy" demonstrated the band's ability to balance their funk metal foundation with increasingly complex arrangements and darker lyrical territory.
This 180-gram black vinyl pressing across two LPs features a gatefold jacket, delivering the album that represents Primus at their most commercially successful while refusing to compromise their unconventional approach to songwriting and performance.
