Portugal. The Man has challenged both itself and listeners for years with adventurous albums that blur the lines between indie, alternative, and experimental sounds. Released in 2025, SHISH finds the Grammy-winning Portland band returning to its Alaskan roots with a deeply personal sonic homage. Named for the remote fishing village of Shishmaref on Alaska's Seward Peninsula, this tenth studio album marks a bold creative shift as the band operates independently through their own KNIK imprint. Frontman John Gourley, now a father and set up in a home studio, has created a spacious environment for his lofty indie rock visions to flourish.

The album blends elements of rock, hardcore, surf rock, and psychedelic rock to make something completely new for Portugal. The Man. Two turbulent tracks open the record: the cosmic-rock collage "Denali" and the mutant hardcore blitz "Pittman Ralliers," both inspired by Alaska's infamous volcanic peak, Mt. McKinley. The frenetic garage-rock energy of "Mush" and the string-swept anthem "Tanana" showcase the band's refusal to be pigeonholed. The chaotic wall of sound in "Pittman Ralliers" sits comfortably next to the subtly twangy and wholly stunning "Kokhanockers," demonstrating the duo's innate chemistry.

This special edition pressing features red eco-vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket with spot gloss detailing, complemented by a printed inner sleeve and insert. Produced by John Gourley and Kane Ritchotte, with mixing by John Congleton and mastering by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound, the album delivers professional sonic clarity while maintaining the raw, personal energy that defines the project. The eco-vinyl format reflects the band's ongoing commitment to environmental advocacy.
