Following the demise of Jane's Addiction, frontman Perry Farrell and drummer Stephen Perkins formed Porno for Pyros after acquiring guitarist Peter DiStefano and bass player Martyn LeNoble. Farrell named the band after seeing an ad for fireworks in a pornographic magazine, with the name also connected through song lyrics to the LA riots which occurred in the band's hometown around the time of Porno for Pyros' inception. Prior to releasing their eponymous first album, Porno for Pyros embarked on a nationwide tour to support the new band. By the time the band's debut album was released in 1993, anticipation surrounding the project was enough to briefly drive the album to the No. 3 position on the Billboard top 200 list. This Rocktober 2025 Rhino Reserve pressing is pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing.
The album blends alt-rock, psychedelia, and art-punk across eleven tracks that showcase Farrell's distinctive vocal delivery and conceptual ambitions. "Pets" became a number one hit on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart, featuring a video directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris that received heavy MTV rotation. The song deals with dissatisfaction with the human race and theorizes that once extraterrestrials take over the Earth, "We'll make great pets." The album's first single paired "Cursed Female" and "Cursed Male," two tracks that appear separately on the album but were also released together in medley form. Additional highlights include "Sadness," "Porno for Pyros," and "Orgasm," each revealing Farrell's willingness to push lyrical boundaries while Perkins' percussion work and DiStefano's guitar provide textured backdrops that range from minimalist to explosive.
Pressed on 180-gram audiophile vinyl at Fidelity Record Pressing as part of Rhino's new Rhino Reserve line, this Rocktober 2025 indie exclusive edition delivers enhanced clarity and depth. The pressing captures the album's dynamic range, from Stephen Perkins' intricate percussion textures to Peter DiStefano's guitar work and Martyn LeNoble's bass grooves. Following the album's release, Porno for Pyros continued a heavy touring schedule, including an appearance at Woodstock '94. This limited edition offers a premium way to experience the debut from one of the 1990s' most provocative alternative rock bands.
