Pink Floyd built Wish You Were Here around long-form arrangements, synthesizers, guitar, and lyrics confronting absence, alienation, and the pressures surrounding the music business. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" frames the album in two extended sections, while "Welcome to the Machine," "Have a Cigar," and the title song occupy the center. The original five-track album remains intact here as the first LP of this 50th Anniversary 3LP set.

"Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts. 1-5)" opens gradually through Richard Wright's keyboards and David Gilmour's guitar before the vocal enters, while "Welcome to the Machine" relies on synthesizers and acoustic guitar. "Have a Cigar" moves with a firmer rock groove and Roy Harper on lead vocal, and "Wish You Were Here" strips the arrangement back around acoustic guitar. The bonus discs revisit these songs through demos, alternate takes, instrumentals, and a complete new stereo mix of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond."

This 50th Anniversary box set contains three 180g black vinyl LPs in a slipcase, pairing the original album with nine studio rarities. Six of those bonus tracks had never been officially released, including four newly mixed by James Guthrie and two presented in their original studio mixes. The final side contains "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Pts. 1-9, New Stereo Mix)" as one continuous piece.
