Originally recorded at Britannia Row Studios in London throughout 1976 and released January 1977, Pink Floyd's tenth studio album Animals received its first-ever remix in 2018, courtesy of longtime collaborator James Guthrie with mastering by Bernie Grundman. This September 2022 vinyl release presents the 2018 stereo remix on 180-gram vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket with a 28-page booklet featuring rarely seen behind-the-scenes photographs, live images, and memorabilia. The album peaked at number two in the UK and number three in the US upon its original release, eventually achieving quadruple Platinum certification in the United States. This pressing features alternate cover artwork reimagined by Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis, who photographed Battersea Power Station during its recent conversion work and experimented with modern digital coloring techniques.
Loosely based on George Orwell's Animal Farm, the concept album critiques capitalism and sociopolitical decay through animal metaphors. The album opens with "Pigs on the Wing (Part One)" before launching into "Dogs," a 17-minute epic co-written by David Gilmour that showcases his soaring guitar solos and Roger Waters' biting lyrics about ruthless businessmen. "Pigs (Three Different Ones)" targets the despotic ruling class with scathing commentary, while "Sheep" depicts the masses rising up against their oppressors. The album closes with "Pigs on the Wing (Part Two)," bookending the darkness with a tender acoustic moment. Recorded during a period of increasing tension within the band, the album represents Waters' growing dominance as primary songwriter and marked a shift toward longer-form compositions and darker themes that would continue through The Wall.
This 180-gram pressing captures the enhanced clarity and separation of Guthrie's 2018 remix, which brings new sonic depth to Nick Mason's thundering drums, Waters' commanding bass lines, and Richard Wright's atmospheric keyboards. Made in the Netherlands with dead-flat vinyl and quiet surfaces, the pressing reveals details previously buried in the original mix. The gatefold jacket houses a 28-page booklet with photography from the iconic 1976 Battersea Power Station shoot, when the inflatable pig Algie famously broke loose and drifted into Heathrow Airport's flight path. The alternate cover artwork updates Storm Thorgerson's iconic design for the modern era while maintaining the album's bleak Orwellian message about moral decay.
