Texas metallers Pantera erupted onto the major label scene with Cowboys From Hell, released on July 24, 1990, through Atco Records. The album marked the band's major label debut and their first collaboration with producer Terry Date, signaling a complete departure from their earlier glam metal sound in favor of a heavier, more aggressive approach that would help define groove metal. Recorded at Pantego Sound Studio in Pantego, Texas, from February to April 1990, then mixed at The Carriage House in Stamford, Connecticut, the album captures the ferocious chemistry between Dimebag Darrell's blazing guitar work, Phil Anselmo's versatile vocals, Vinnie Paul's polyrhythmic drumming, and Rex Brown's crushing bass. This 2021 limited edition white & whiskey brown marbled vinyl pressing celebrates one of the most influential metal albums of all time, certified Platinum and credited with reviving heavy metal during a period when it was fading from the mainstream.
The 12-track album showcases the band's "power groove" sound with songs like the title track, "Domination," and "Primal Concrete Sledge." Opening with the confrontational title track, the album establishes its uncompromising intensity through Dimebag's machine-gun riffing and Anselmo's commanding vocals. "Cemetery Gates" served as a blueprint for modern hard rock ballads, featuring elegiac acoustic guitars intertwined with mournful vocals before giving way to Dimebag Darrell's epic, smoldering electric guitar work. "Psycho Holiday" delivers chaotic energy with banshee screams and crashing hooks, while "Domination" became a live staple with its crushing main riff. "Primal Concrete Sledge" signaled the increasingly heavy direction the band would take, and "The Art of Shredding" closes the album with whiplash-inducing guitar heroics that justified its title.
This limited edition marbled vinyl pressing delivers the album's sonic assault with impressive clarity and dynamics. Mastered by Howie Weinberg at Masterdisk in New York City for the original release, this 2021 pressing captures the precision of the instrumentation and the full range of Anselmo's vocals. The white & whiskey brown marbled vinyl adds visual appeal to match the music's intensity, housed in a picture sleeve that recreates the iconic cover featuring the band superimposed over a 1910 photo of the Cosmopolitan Saloon in Telluride, Colorado.
