Opeth reshape Heritage around vintage progressive rock, organ-heavy arrangements, and Mikael Akerfeldt's clean vocal writing rather than the death metal force that defined much of the band's earlier catalog. Recorded at Atlantis Studios in Stockholm and mixed by Steven Wilson, the album marks a sharp turn in Opeth's sound and purpose. This 2LP vinyl record is pressed on 180g black vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket with a large poster.
"The Devil's Orchard" opens the album's main body with a memorable refrain, setting heavy guitar accents against organ and shifting rhythmic parts. "I Feel The Dark" moves between restrained passages and heavier bursts, while "Slither" pays tribute to Ronnie James Dio through a shorter, hard-rocking structure. "Nepenthe" leans into jazzier instrumental movement, "Haxprocess" brings the record into darker progressive territory, and "Folklore" gives the album one of its longest, most developed compositions.
Heritage stands as the album where Opeth fully stepped away from growled vocals and into a more 1970s-rooted progressive rock language. The songs still carry metal weight, but the writing places more emphasis on dynamics, organ, acoustic passages, and extended instrumental turns.
