Motley Crue's fifth studio album represents the band's commercial and creative pinnacle, recorded at Little Mountain Sound Studios in Vancouver with producer Bob Rock. The album sold more than six million copies in the United States, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 in October 1989 and becoming the band's only chart-topping album. Rock's meticulous production approach resulted in a tighter and more polished sound than their previous releases.

The title track became the band's highest-charting single, peaking at number six on the Billboard Hot 100. "Kickstart My Heart" followed as the second single, inspired by Nikki Sixx's 1987 overdose, while the power ballad "Without You" reached number eight. Additional singles "Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)" and "Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)" extended the album's radio presence into 1990. The band won best heavy metal/hard rock album of the year at the American Music Awards in January 1991.
