Mitski - Puberty 2 [10th Anniversary Forest Shadow Green LP]

Mitski moves between quiet confession and explosive guitar rock on Puberty 2, her fourth studio album on Dead Oceans. Co-produced with Patrick Hyland, the record follows the sharper electric sound of Bury Me at Makeout Creek while making room for piano, restrained vocals, and sudden shifts in volume. The limited-edition 10th anniversary vinyl record is pressed on Forest Shadow colored vinyl, celebrating ten years of the original release.

The opening track "Happy" begins with a pulse before horns and guitars enter, matching lyrics about a brief visit from happiness. "Your Best American Girl" starts with a subdued vocal and builds into a loud chorus as Mitski considers the distance between two upbringings. On "I Bet on Losing Dogs," a slower pace and repeated refrain convey devotion to a relationship destined to fail. "My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars" uses frantic strummed guitar and shouted lines to express frustration with work and ambition.

Mitski examines how affection becomes tangled with insecurity and fear of loss. In "Fireworks," she imagines living with grief; "A Loving Feeling" addresses the loneliness of a hidden relationship. The closer, "A Burning Hill," turns toward exhaustion and hopes for change. Released in 2016, Puberty 2 earned acclaim for songs about identity, longing, and difficult attachments.
