Mitski's eighth studio album centers on a narrative about a reclusive woman living in an unkempt house who exists as a deviant outside her home but finds freedom within it. Produced and engineered by Patrick Hyland, who has worked with Mitski on multiple albums, Nothing's About to Happen to Me builds upon the orchestral approach established on 2023's The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We.
The 11-track collection features live instrumentation from The Land touring band, with orchestral arrangements conducted by Drew Erickson and recorded at Sunset Sound and TTG Studios in Los Angeles. Bob Weston handled mastering duties, while Kris Bulakowski provided assistance with drums and logistics. Marc Burkhardt created the cover art painting for the album.
Lead single "Where's My Phone?" arrived with a video directed by Noel Paul, inspired by Shirley Jackson's novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle. The track showcases Mitski's exploration of anxiety and domestic paranoia through fuzzed-out production. Other tracks on the album include "If I Leave," "I'll Change for You," "Cats," and "Charon's Obol," the latter referencing the ancient Greek coin placed in a deceased person's mouth to pay the ferryman Charon.
The album represents Mitski's continued collaboration with her established creative team while she simultaneously works on music and lyrics for a stage musical adaptation of The Queen's Gambit. Following her recent concert film Mitski: The Land, which screened in 27 countries, and its companion live album, this studio release marks her return to new material.
This limited edition Indie Exclusive pressing on tansy yellow vinyl arrives alongside the standard vinyl edition and other physical formats. The pressing delivers the album's layered orchestration and Mitski's intimate vocal performances across 11 tracks that explore themes of isolation, domesticity, and transformation.
