MGMT - Congratulations [2 LP, 180g Black Vinyl]

MGMT moved further into psychedelic rock on their second studio album, Congratulations, replacing much of the dance-pop approach of their debut with electric guitars, layered keyboards, and longer compositions. Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser worked with producer Pete Kember, also known as Sonic Boom, on a set of nine songs that moves between concise pop writing and extended instrumental passages. This 2LP vinyl record edition uses 180g black vinyl.

The opener, "It's Working," combines a brisk drum pattern with swirling keyboards and a chorus that shifts the song's pace. "Flash Delirium" moves rapidly through contrasting sections, incorporating group vocals, guitar riffs, and abrupt changes in rhythm. The twelve-minute "Siberian Breaks" unfolds through several connected passages, alternating acoustic guitar, synthesizers, and electric arrangements. "Brian Eno" brings an insistent beat and a repeated vocal refrain, naming the influential musician in its title.

After Oracular Spectacular, MGMT gave more space to unconventional song forms. The lyrics address public attention, uncertainty, and expectations after a commercial breakthrough. The title song closes the album with a restrained acoustic arrangement and reflections on recognition and criticism. Other songs reference Brian Eno and Dan Treacy. Printed inner sleeves accompany the two vinyl records.
