Four years separated Matchbox Twenty's diamond-selling debut from Mad Season, originally released in May 2000 at the height of Rob Thomas's success with Santana's "Smooth." Produced once again by Matt Serletic, the album entered the Billboard 200 at number three and achieved quadruple platinum certification. The band expanded their sonic palette beyond the guitar-driven approach of Yourself Or Someone Like You, incorporating orchestral arrangements and horn sections while maintaining the melodic rock foundation that defined their sound.

"Bent" became the album's biggest commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and spending multiple weeks at the top of various rock and adult contemporary charts. "If You're Gone" followed as the second single, peaking at number five on the Hot 100. The album also spawned the singles "Mad Season" and "Last Beautiful Girl," with the 13-track collection demonstrating Thomas's continued development as a songwriter alongside contributions from his bandmates Kyle Cook, Adam Gaynor, Brian Yale, and Paul Doucette.
