Coda may have been released in 1982, two years after John Bonham's death, but it plays like a time capsule of Zeppelin's restless creativity. Rather than feeling like leftovers, these eight tracks show the band experimenting across different eras of their career. "We're Gonna Groove," cut live in 1970, is pure early-Zep swagger with Bonham driving a pounding groove beneath Page's sharp, bluesy riffs. "Poor Tom" swings with a loose acoustic feel, Plant delivering playful vocals over Bonham's crisp snare work. "Ozone Baby" and "Darlene," recorded during the In Through the Out Door sessions, lean into a punchy rock-and-roll vibe with Jones's keyboards adding color to the mix. The album pulls from multiple recording periods, giving a peek into different shades of Zeppelin's sound. Page's tone shifts from the raw Les Paul crunch of the early sessions to the cleaner, tighter production of their late '70s work. Bonham's presence looms large throughout, from the thunderous rolls on "Bonzo's Montreux" to the locked-in pocket of "Wearing and Tearing," a track that hinted at Zeppelin's potential move toward heavier, punk-inspired energy had they continued. This 180g black vinyl pressing gives these rarities the treatment they deserve, with warm remastering that highlights the varied textures—from the roomy live feel of the early cuts to the tighter studio polish of the later tracks. The original minimalist sleeve, with its stark typography, is faithfully reproduced. More than just a collection of odds and ends, Coda is a reminder of just how versatile Led Zeppelin was, even in their scraps.
Coda may close the book on Led Zeppelin's studio catalog, but it proves that even their outtakes carry the spark that defined their legacy. * The Spotify track list may not exactly represent the tracks and audio of this LP edition. |
