Kenny Burrell’s late-night showcase Midnight Blue finds the guitarist leading a compact quintet that whispers and stings in equal measure. Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1963 with Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax, Major Holley Jr. on bass, Bill English on drums, and Ray Barretto on congas, this Blue Note classic returns as an Indie Exclusive blue vinyl pressing that highlights the album’s smoky atmosphere and unhurried swing. Burrell leans into tone and touch, shaping blues forms into urbane soul jazz. The opener "Chitlins con Carne" locks into a simmering groove, the title track "Midnight Blue" slides with after-hours sway, and "Wavy Gravy" loosens the shoulders with sly syncopation. Elsewhere "Soul Lament" is a brief, haunting interlude, while "Mule" and "Saturday Night Blues" keep the blues centerline firmly in view. This limited color edition pairs the celebrated Cohearent Audio mastering by Kevin Gray from Blue Note’s Classic Vinyl series with a fresh 180g pressing on blue wax at Optimal in Germany, finished with a Blue Note 85 obi strip. Expect quiet surfaces, unforced dynamics, and the tactile guitar-and-congas interplay that makes this session a go-to evening spin.
A timeless Blue Note session and a striking shelf piece, Midnight Blue in blue vinyl brings mood, melody, and feel to the center of your turntable time.
