Grammy-winning Colombian-American artist Kali Uchis released her fourth studio album Orquídeas through Geffen Records, marking her triumphant return to Spanish-language music. Following 2020's Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios), the album features guest appearances by Peso Pluma, El Alfa, JT, Karol G, and Rauw Alejandro. Uchis explained the title's significance: "The orchid is the national flower of Colombia, and we have more species of orchid than anywhere on earth. I always felt distinctly intrigued and magnetized by the flower. This album is inspired by the timeless, eerie, mystic, striking, graceful and sensual allure of the orchid. With this vast scope of fresh energy, I wish to re-define the way we look at Latinas in music." Upon its release, Orquídeas became Uchis' highest charting album on the US Billboard 200, debuting at number two with 69,000 units. The album received widespread critical acclaim with a Metacritic score of 88, making it her highest rated album on the site.
"Labios Mordidos" with Colombian singer Karol G was released as the album's third single on November 24, 2023, alongside a music video. "Igual que un Ángel," featuring Mexican singer Peso Pluma, was sent to Italian radio as the fourth single, becoming a romantic duet that showcases Uchis' versatility. The album opens with "¿Cómo Así?" before launching into the dance-ready "Me Pongo Loca" and the introspective "Pensamientos Intrusivos." "Muñekita" bridges Uchis' English and Spanish-speaking audiences with help from El Alfa and JT, bringing high-energy dembow vibes. "Diosa," "Te Mata," and "Young Rich & In Love" demonstrate Uchis' ability to traverse reggaeton, bolero, and salsa while maintaining her signature dreamy production. The closer "Dame Beso // Muévete" caps the 14-track journey through Latin music's diverse landscape with sensuality and confidence.
This black vinyl pressing with gatefold jacket delivers the album's lush production with warmth and clarity. The gatefold design showcases the striking photography by Daniel Sannwald, depicting Uchis surrounded by orchids in imagery that matches the album's sensual aesthetic. The expanded jacket space enhances the visual presentation of this celebration of Colombian culture and Latina identity. This pressing captures an artist at the peak of her powers, seamlessly blending genres while honoring her roots.
