Kacey Musgraves returns to Lost Highway Records, the label that launched her career with Same Trailer Different Park in 2013, with Middle of Nowhere, her sixth studio album. Produced with longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, the 13-track record was written during an extended period of post-breakup solitude spent between Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico. Described as a sonic love letter to the musical borders of country, the album draws on adjacent influences including bluegrass, Norteño, and zydeco while returning Musgraves to the witty, plainspoken songwriting that defined her earliest work. This album was made for two-stepping.
The 13 tracks are anchored by Musgraves' sharp lyrical instincts and a guest list that spans generations of country music. Lead single "Dry Spell" is a candid, double-entendre-laden portrait of prolonged singlehood that showcases the humor that made her early albums so distinctive. "Everybody Wants to Be a Cowboy" brings in Billy Strings, while "Horses and Divorces" pairs Musgraves with Miranda Lambert, and "Uncertain, Texas" features Willie Nelson, giving the album deep roots in country tradition. "Coyote," featuring Gregory Alan Isakov, is the album's most contemplative moment, and closer "Hell on Me" brings the record home with characteristic emotional directness.
Released on Lost Highway Records as an Indie Exclusive, this limited edition pressing on Rodeo Clown colored vinyl is produced by Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, the same team behind Musgraves' Grammy-winning Golden Hour.
