Few jazz albums have crossed over into the mainstream the way My Favorite Things did when it arrived in March 1961. John Coltrane's seventh studio album, and his third for Atlantic Records, introduced the world to a new instrument in his hands, the soprano saxophone, and a new approach to the standard repertoire that would define modern jazz for decades. Recorded over three October 1960 sessions at Atlantic Studios in New York with McCoy Tyner on piano, Steve Davis on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, the album captures the early Coltrane Quartet at a pivotal moment of arrival. This 2026 Rhino High Fidelity pressing marks the album's 65th Anniversary and is a breakout LP from the box set John Coltrane: 1960-1964, presented in its original mono mix as a standalone release for the first time in years.
The album opens with its title track, a modal transformation of the Rodgers and Hammerstein song from The Sound of Music that strips away the original chord changes in favor of extended soprano sax and piano vamps over hypnotic waltz-time tonic centers. The result became Coltrane's most requested live piece and a radio hit in its own right. "Summertime," Gershwin's Porgy and Bess aria reimagined as a brooding, expansive tenor showcase, ranks among the album's most commanding performances, with Coltrane pressing deep into the melody before fully releasing it to improvisation. "But Not for Me" applies the harmonic language of the Coltrane changes to a Gershwin standard, while the intimately swinging "Everytime We Say Goodbye" gives McCoy Tyner extended space to define his role as more than an accompanist. On a four-track album, every track earns its place.
Lacquers for this pressing are AAA, cut directly from the original analog mono master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, making this a genuinely audiophile-grade listening experience within Rhino's High Fidelity series. The all-analog signal chain honors Tom Dowd's original Atlantic recording with exceptional depth and tonal presence, and the 180g vinyl is pressed at Optimal Media. Packaging includes a tip-on gatefold jacket featuring the alternate French release cover art on the exterior and the original U.S. cover art inside, along with an exclusive liner notes insert. As an Indie Exclusive SYEOR 2026 release, this pressing is limited.
