November 2 and 3, 1961 at the Village Vanguard in New York's Greenwich Village, John Coltrane and his quartet took the stage for what would become one of the most consequential live recordings in jazz history. Live at the Village Vanguard, released in February 1962 on Impulse! Records, was Coltrane's first official live album and the first recording to document all four members of his classic quartet together: McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. This 2022 reissue is part of the Verve Acoustic Sounds Series, a collaboration between Verve Label Group, Universal Music Enterprises, and Chad Kassem of Acoustic Sounds, designed to deliver audiophile-grade pressings of the most significant jazz recordings ever made.
The album contains just three tracks, each substantial enough to define a career. "Spiritual," a modal original that opens the set, features Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet alongside Coltrane's tenor, the two instruments weaving around each other in a 13-minute performance that balances collective intensity with moments of striking tenderness. "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise," drawn from the 1928 Romberg and Hammerstein operetta, is reimagined on soprano saxophone with Elvin Jones working in brushes beneath it, the standard transformed almost beyond recognition into something entirely Coltrane's own. "Chasin' the Trane," the album's centerpiece at nearly 16 minutes, is an unaccompanied tenor saxophone improvisation over a walking bass and drums, Coltrane pushing relentlessly through blues and modal ideas in a performance that unsettled critics at the time and sounds no less urgent today.
Mastered by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound from the best available source, as the original session tapes no longer exist, this pressing represents the finest modern transfer of this material on vinyl. The 180g vinyl is pressed at Quality Record Pressings, one of the most respected pressing facilities in North America. Packaging is by Stoughton Printing in a tip-on gatefold jacket that replicates the original Impulse! artwork with care. While the absence of the original master tapes is an honest caveat, the technical execution of this pressing within those constraints is audiophile in every meaningful sense.
