Recorded during the same October 1960 Atlantic Studios sessions that produced My Favorite Things and Coltrane Plays the Blues, Coltrane's Sound was assembled by Atlantic Records from unreleased material and held back until June 1964, by which point Coltrane had already moved to Impulse! and recorded A Love Supreme. That four-year gap left the album somewhat out of step with its own moment, contributing to a legacy that has long been considered undervalued relative to its actual quality. This 2026 Rhino High Fidelity pressing, an Indie Exclusive SYEOR release tied to the Coltrane Centennial, presents the album in its original mono mix on 180g vinyl for a new generation of listeners to discover.

The six tracks here distill the October 1960 sessions to their most focused and varied performances. "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," a Jerry Brainin composition, opens the album with Coltrane soaring through the melody on tenor saxophone with lyrical ease, Elvin Jones pushing beneath him with precise, driving cymbal work. "Central Park West" offers one of the most intimate ballad performances of Coltrane's Atlantic period, his soprano saxophone tracing the original composition with quiet, searching beauty. "Liberia" is the album's most restless and exploratory track, Coltrane pressing his tenor into sheets of sound that hint at the directions he would pursue on Impulse! "Equinox," the second-side slow blues original, and "Satellite," a harmonically inventive reworking of "How High the Moon," complete a program that moves effortlessly between lyricism and intensity. "Body and Soul," the Johnny Green standard, rounds out the six tracks with a performance that reimagines Coleman Hawkins' signature piece entirely on Coltrane's own terms.

Cut AAA directly from the original analog mono master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio, this Rhino High Fidelity pressing is a genuinely audiophile-grade release, with the all-analog signal chain preserving the full warmth and presence of Tom Dowd's original Atlantic engineering. The 180g vinyl is pressed at Optimal Media. Packaging features a tip-on gatefold jacket with the alternate French release cover art on the exterior and an exclusive liner notes insert. As an Indie Exclusive SYEOR 2026 release, availability is limited.
