John Carpenter - Cathedral [Amethyst Vinyl LP & 7-Inch]

John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies build Cathedral as an instrumental score for Carpenter's first original graphic novel. The album grew from his dream about an abandoned Los Angeles church and an elevator descending into hell, giving the trio a narrative rather than an imaginary film to score. Their established synth language remains intact, but electric guitar and heavier metal riffs take a much larger role in the fourteen-track work.

"Primeval" opens with Daniel Davies' guitar in the foreground, while "Abandoned Cathedral" brings strings into the trio's synth-driven framework. "The Ferryman" advances the story with a measured, suspenseful pulse, and "Lord of the Underground" turns toward the album's heaviest riffing. Synth figures remain prominent. "Revenge" carries that force into the final stretch before "Resolution" completes the main LP, allowing the sequence to move from discovery and descent through confrontation and aftermath.

Each track corresponds to a section of the Cathedral graphic novel, and the included liner notes provide prompts that connect the music with the story. This amethyst vinyl edition pairs the full fourteen-track LP with an exclusive 7-inch single. The bonus record contains live performances of "Lord of the Underground" and "Last Rites," recorded at the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles.
