Jhené Aiko freestyled an entire album on the Big Island of Hawaii where her great grandmother was born. Chilombo debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 152,000 units, marking the biggest album debut from a female R&B artist since Beyoncé's Lemonade in 2016. The album was certified Platinum in 2021 and received three GRAMMY nominations including Album of the Year. Released March 6, 2020, Chilombo racked up over 170 million first-week streams.

Executive produced by Aiko with Fisticuffs and Lejkeys, Chilombo incorporates crystal alchemy singing bowls for sound healing across 20 tracks. "Triggered (Freestyle)" earned Platinum certification, while "B.S." featuring H.E.R., "Pussy Fairy (OTW)," and "None of Your Concern" with Big Sean all achieved Gold. The album features Nas, Future, Miguel, and John Legend. Aiko describes the project as freestyles touching on relationships past, present, and future, creating music for healing that transforms pain into art.

This 5th anniversary edition 2LP features black vinyl housed in a gatefold jacket. Billboard included Chilombo in their "50 Best Albums of 2020" list. The album name honors Aiko's full name, Jhené Aiko Efuru Chilombo, meaning "wild beast."
