Grace Slick's commanding vocals and the interplay of electric guitars, acoustic passages, and group harmonies define Jefferson Airplane's Surrealistic Pillow. The band's second album brought Slick and drummer Spencer Dryden into the lineup, pairing San Francisco psychedelic rock with folk-rooted songwriting. Originally issued in 1967, the album became a defining release of San Francisco counterculture and includes two of the group's best-known singles.
"Somebody To Love" opens with a forceful vocal from Slick and a driving electric arrangement, while "White Rabbit" builds steadily around imagery drawn from Alice in Wonderland. Marty Balin's "Today" takes a quieter approach, with an intimate lead vocal and restrained accompaniment. "Comin' Back To Me" slows the pace further through its acoustic setting and reflective lyrics. Together, these songs show the contrast between the band's electric performances and its gentler, folk-influenced material.
The album moves between love songs, personal uncertainty, and the altered perspectives of San Francisco psychedelia. Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, and Grace Slick each contribute vocals, while Jorma Kaukonen's acoustic instrumental "Embryonic Journey" shows another side of the group. This stereo vinyl record is a remastered 180g black vinyl pressing of the original eleven-song album.
