Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit's seventh studio album Reunions arrived in May 2020 as a meditation on memory, mortality, and moral responsibility. Produced by Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb and recorded at Nashville's historic RCA Studio A, the album finds Isbell reuniting with ghosts from his past while examining present-day complacency and privilege. Featuring the 400 Unit lineup of Derry deBorja, Chad Gamble, Jimbo Hart, Amanda Shires, and Sadler Vaden, with special guest vocals from David Crosby and Jay Buchanan of Rival Sons, these 10 tracks balance introspection with outward observation, crafting songs Isbell had envisioned for years but only recently possessed the skill to execute.
The album opens with the sweeping "What've I Done to Help," a nearly seven-minute meditation on guilt and inaction that sets the tone for the record's unflinching self-examination. "Only Children" became an instant standout with its empathetic storytelling, while "Be Afraid" directly confronts fear and social responsibility. The gentle "Dreamsicle" offers nostalgic reflection, "River" delivers understated beauty, and "It Gets Easier" provides hard-won wisdom about grief and recovery. Throughout, Isbell demonstrates why critics consistently rank him among the finest songwriters working today, combining literary detail with emotional authenticity and musical sophistication.
Pressed on black vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeve featuring lyrics and credits, this edition captures the album's delicate sonic textures and thoughtful arrangements. The vinyl format enhances the album's dynamic range, from intimate acoustic moments to full-band crescendos, preserving the clarity of Isbell's vocals and the interplay between the 400 Unit's seasoned musicians. The gatefold presentation reflects the care put into every aspect of this critically acclaimed release.
