J. Geils Band - Blow Your Face Out Live [2 LP, Spirit Of 76]

The J. Geils Band built Blow Your Face Out from performances recorded at Boston Garden and Detroit's Cobo Hall, preserving the band's concert attack over four sides. Peter Wolf drives the set as vocalist and frontman, while J. Geils' guitar, Magic Dick's harmonica, Seth Justman's keyboards, Danny Klein's bass, and Stephen Jo Bladd's drums push the songs through blues, R&B, soul, and hard-driving rock. It remains the band's second full-length live album.

"Musta Got Lost" stretches the studio hit into a longer stage performance, giving Peter Wolf room for his spoken introduction before the band drops into the song. "Where Did Our Love Go" recasts the Supremes hit with harmonica, guitar, and an R&B pulse, while "Detroit Breakdown" works as an extended blues-rock workout. "Give It to Me" closes the fourth side with a long stretch of guitar, keyboards, harmonica, and Wolf's lead vocal, bringing the set to a finish through the band's own material rather than a cover.

This Spirit Of '76 Series pressing returns the 17-track concert album as a limited edition indie exclusive 2LP housed in a gatefold jacket. Rhino states that the set was remastered from the original analog masters by Bernie Grundman. The performances were drawn from Boston Garden and Cobo Hall shows, preserving the original four-side program with the spoken "Intro" before "Houseparty" intact.
