Iron Maiden's twin-guitar leads, galloping bass lines, and dramatic vocals define Somewhere Back In Time: The Best Of 1980-1989, a collection drawn from the band's breakthrough decade. Songs from The Number Of The Beast, Piece Of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere In Time, and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son appear alongside early material and concert recordings. This double vinyl record edition marks the compilation's first release on black vinyl.

"The Trooper" combines Steve Harris's driving bass with harmonized guitar lines, while "2 Minutes To Midnight" builds around a heavy riff and a forceful chorus. "Wasted Years" brings Adrian Smith's melodic guitar hook and lyrics about making the most of the present. "The Number Of The Beast" opens with a spoken biblical quotation before accelerating into one of Bruce Dickinson's best-known performances. "Hallowed Be Thy Name" develops from a measured introduction into an extended, fast-moving metal arrangement.

First released in 2008 alongside the Somewhere Back In Time World Tour, this compilation combines studio tracks with performances from concerts. "Aces High" and "Iron Maiden" are heard live at Long Beach Arena, while "Phantom Of The Opera" and "Wrathchild" were captured at London's Hammersmith Odeon. The selection spans material from the band's early albums through Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son.

"Powerslave" adds an Egyptian-themed epic, and "Can I Play With Madness" brings a concise chorus from Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son. The live "Phantom Of The Opera" represents the band's early, longer-form writing, with changing tempos and extended guitar passages.
