Horace Silver shaped Song For My Father around blues, gospel, hard bop, and rhythms connected to his Cape Verdean heritage and a trip to Brazil. The album documents a change in his quintet, with two tracks from an earlier lineup and four from a later session featuring Joe Henderson and Carmell Jones. Silver's piano leads the group through recurring themes, full horn passages, and extended solos that follow the structure of each composition.
"Song For My Father" begins with its famous bass figure and develops through Silver's piano theme, Joe Henderson's tenor saxophone, and Carmell Jones's trumpet before returning to the opening idea. "The Natives Are Restless Tonight" moves with a faster, more urgent pulse, while "Calcutta Cutie" uses a lighter melody and a more relaxed rhythmic frame. "Que Pasa" reduces the material to a spare Latin-influenced groove, and "The Kicker" turns Joe Henderson's composition into a firm quintet performance.
The title composition was written for Silver's father and draws from both Cape Verdean folk melody and Brazilian rhythm. "Lonely Woman" changes the setting to piano trio and gives Silver more room to develop the melody without horns. This Blue Note Essentials Series vinyl record is mastered from a high-resolution digital source and pressed on 140g vinyl for a more budget priced series that still sounds great.
