Courtney Love's confrontational vocals and Hole's guitar-driven songs define Live Through This, the band's widely acclaimed breakthrough. Recorded by Love, guitarist Eric Erlandson, bassist Kristen Pfaff, and drummer Patty Schemel, the album moves from the forceful opening of "Violet" to quieter passages that leave Love's words exposed. Produced by Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade, it followed Pretty On The Inside and brought the band wider recognition.
"Violet" opens with restrained singing before the guitars and drums surge into its chorus, while "Miss World" pairs a memorable melody with lyrics about appearance and self-worth. "Doll Parts" uses a slower pace and plainspoken repetition to describe longing and insecurity. "Jennifer's Body" drives forward with a recurring guitar riff and a story of violence, and "Softer, Softest" starts quietly before becoming more forceful. The contrast between these performances is central to the album's approach.
Love's lyrics confront beauty standards, exploitation, motherhood, and personal relationships throughout Live Through This. Founding guitarist Eric Erlandson oversaw this newly remastered vinyl record edition, issued as RSD Essential No. 105 on Pop Bottle Clear vinyl. The restored packaging includes the complete original booklet, reproduced for a vinyl release for the first time.
