Herbie Hancock built Maiden Voyage around five original compositions linked by ideas of travel, open water, and discovery. His piano leads Freddie Hubbard, George Coleman, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams through spacious themes that leave room for close group interplay. Written while Hancock was still a member of the Miles Davis Quintet, the album turns that working chemistry into a defining Blue Note recording from his early career as a leader.
The title track moves on a suspended piano figure and Tony Williams' rolling cymbal pattern, with Freddie Hubbard and George Coleman taking contrasting solos. "Eye of the Hurricane" accelerates the pace through a forceful theme and rapid exchanges, while "Little One" develops quietly from a measured melody. "Survival of the Fittest" uses shifting sections and denser group movement, and "Dolphin Dance" closes the album with a flowing theme that later became one of Hancock's most frequently recorded compositions.
Every piece was written by Hancock, giving the quintet a unified program rather than a set divided between originals and standards. Ron Carter and Tony Williams connect the title piece, the urgency of "Eye of the Hurricane," and the changing movement of "Survival of the Fittest." This edition of Maiden Voyage was mastered from a high-resolution digital source and pressed on 140g vinyl for a great sounding budget presentation.

"Maiden Voyage" and "Dolphin Dance" became lasting jazz standards, while "Eye of the Hurricane" shows the quintet at its most driving. Hubbard's trumpet and Coleman's tenor saxophone give Hancock's themes two distinct solo voices over Carter and Williams.
