Green recorded the album with Joe Henderson, Bobby Hutcherson, Duke Pearson, Bob Cranshaw, and Al Harewood. The title piece stretches beyond 14 minutes, giving each player room to develop melodic ideas as the group settles into a relaxed pulse. Green's phrasing and Pearson's arrangements shape the four compositions.

The title track, "Idle Moments," develops slowly around Green's guitar lines, with Henderson's tenor saxophone and Hutcherson's vibraphone taking their turns. "Jean De Fleur," written by Green, moves at a quicker pace and gives his single-note runs more space. The group approaches John Lewis' "Django" as a blues-inflected tribute, while Pearson's "Nomad" closes the set with firmer rhythmic movement and extended improvisation. Together, these four pieces show the players working at contrasting tempos.

Recorded in two sessions at Rudy Van Gelder's New Jersey studio, the album pairs Green's guitar with an unusually rich front line for a small jazz group. Henderson's saxophone, Hutcherson's vibraphone, and Pearson's piano each contribute distinct melodic passages.
