Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Girl [Anniversary Blue Iris Vinyl]

Rob Cavallo's production helped Goo Goo Dolls push the melodic side of their rock sound further on Dizzy Up The Girl, pairing layered guitars, strings, and big choruses with songs that retain the band's alternative-rock edge. The Buffalo group, formed in 1986, had already broken through with "Name," but this sixth album expanded that reach dramatically. This Anniversary Edition vinyl record is pressed on Blue Iris colored vinyl with a subtle swirl effect.

"Slide" moves on bright guitar picking and an easy, forward pulse, while "Black Balloon" slows things down with acoustic and electric guitars supporting a darker lyric. "Broadway" brings more punch and a stronger rock drive, drawing on the band's Buffalo roots, while "Iris" builds from acoustic guitar into strings, mandolin, and one of John Rzeznik's most recognizable vocal performances. Together, those songs show the album moving between concise rock singles, ballads, and more expansive arrangements.

More than a decade into their career, Goo Goo Dolls reached a much broader audience with Dizzy Up The Girl. John Rzeznik handles most of the lead vocals, while bassist Robby Takac takes the microphone on several cuts, continuing the two-singer setup heard on earlier records. The Blue Iris pressing carries Warner's Anniversary Edition designation and retains the original 13-song album.
