Originally released on May 20, 1997, The Colour and the Shape marked the true debut of Foo Fighters as a full band, with Dave Grohl stepping out from behind the drum kit to lead a lineup that included guitarist Pat Smear, bassist Nate Mendel, and drummer William Goldsmith. Recorded primarily at Grandmaster Recordings in Hollywood with producer Gil Norton, the album drew from Grohl's personal upheaval following his divorce, resulting in a record that balanced raw aggression with genuine emotional weight. This 2011 reissue on RCA/Roswell Records brings the album back to vinyl as a standard black 2 LP pressing, remastered for a new generation of listeners.
Musically, The Colour and the Shape moves between punishing riffs and vulnerable balladry with a confidence that few rock records of the era matched. "Monkey Wrench" opens the album proper with coiled energy and an explosive chorus, "Everlong" pairs fingerpicked verses with a full-band surge that has never lost its impact, and "My Hero" delivers one of Grohl's most anthemic vocal performances. The quieter "February Stars" and the restrained "Walking After You" round out a record with far more emotional range than its radio hits alone suggest.
This 2011 reissue was mastered at Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, Maine, with lacquers cut at Bernie Grundman Mastering in Hollywood, California. The pressing is spread across four sides of standard black vinyl, giving each side adequate groove space to maintain dynamic headroom throughout. The remastering yields a clear, punchy presentation with guitars that cut through the mix without overwhelming the low end. The result is a clean, listenable pressing of one of the decade's most enduring rock records.
