Released in October 1979, Tusk marked a bold departure from Fleetwood Mac's polished pop sound. The album is considered more experimental than Fleetwood Mac's previous albums, partly due to Buckingham's sparser songwriting arrangements and the influence of post-punk. Drawing inspiration from the edgier modern sounds of New Wave and punk, the band created a sprawling double album that defied commercial expectations. The production costs reached about $1.4 million, making it the most expensive rock album recorded to that date. This Rocktober 2025 pressing features exclusive transparent blue vinyl, celebrating one of rock's most ambitious and sonically adventurous double albums.

Led by Buckingham's intricate arrangements and eclectic influences, Tusk incorporates elements of pop, rock, new wave, and even a touch of disco. Stevie Nicks takes center stage with powerful vocals on tracks like the emotional ballad "Sara" and the anthemic title track. Christine McVie contributes the playful "Think About Me" and the surprisingly dark, jazzy "Brown Eyes," while Buckingham provides the wild cards in largely self-recorded plunges into his own skittish psyche, culminating in the massive title song beefed up by the University of Southern California's marching band. Influenced by bands such as Talking Heads, Buckingham was desperate to make Mac relevant to a post-punk world.

This limited edition Rocktober 2025 pressing brings Tusk to life on transparent blue vinyl across two LPs. Despite peaking at number four on the Billboard 200 and selling four million copies, the album was regarded as a commercial failure compared to Rumours. However, Tusk is a bracing, weirdly affecting work that may not be as universal or immediate as Rumours, but is every bit as classic. As a piece of pop art, it's peerless. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, and this striking indie exclusive edition honors Fleetwood Mac's willingness to risk everything in pursuit of artistic freedom.

Like the Beatles' White Album before it, Tusk reveled in its own messiness, jumbling together the work of three distinct songwriters into a sprawling masterpiece that continues to reveal new layers with each listen.
