When Elvis Presley was drafted into the U.S. Army in March 1958, RCA Victor faced a challenge: keeping the King's name before the public with no new performances or recordings. Their solution, For LP Fans Only, compiled nine tracks previously available only as singles, plus "Poor Boy" from the Love Me Tender EP. Released February 6, 1959, the album reached number 19 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart. Four tracks came from Elvis's legendary Sun Records sessions, which were difficult to find outside the South. For LP Fans Only marked the first time many of these songs appeared on 12" vinyl, introducing younger fans to Elvis's primal rockabilly roots.
Recorded between 1954 and 1956 across Sun Studios in Memphis and RCA Victor Studios in Nashville and New York, For LP Fans Only captures Elvis at his rawest. Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's "That's All Right" opens with the song that launched rock and roll, while Junior Parker's "Mystery Train" delivers spooky, haunting intensity. "My Baby Left Me" and "Shake, Rattle And Roll" showcase Scotty Moore's blazing guitar work, while "Lawdy, Miss Clawdy" channels New Orleans R&B. The ballad "I Was The One" demonstrates Elvis's emotional range, and "You're A Heartbreaker" captures his Sun Records swagger. Sessions featured Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, and The Jordanaires, with production varying by session between Sam Phillips at Sun and Steve Sholes at RCA.
This limited edition pressing is individually numbered out of 2,500 copies worldwide on 180g translucent blue vinyl. The package recreates the original 1959 album artwork. While marketed as audiophile vinyl due to its 180g weight and limited pressing status, specific mastering and pressing plant details for this edition have not been disclosed. For LP Fans Only remains an essential snapshot of Elvis's 1950s peak, documenting the moment when rhythm and blues, country, and rock and roll converged.
