RCA Victor paid $40,000 to buy Elvis Presley's contract from Sun Records in 1955, a gamble that paid off spectacularly. Elvis Presley became the first rock and roll album to reach number one on the Billboard charts and the first to sell over one million copies. The album spent ten weeks at number one and was certified Gold in 1966 and Platinum in 2011. Rolling Stone ranked the album number 56 on its list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Recorded at RCA Victor Studios in Nashville and New York with five tracks from Sun Records, Elvis Presley blends rhythm and blues, country, and rock and roll into something revolutionary. Carl Perkins' "Blue Suede Shoes" opens with infectious rockabilly energy, while "Blue Moon" transforms the Rodgers and Hart standard into a doo-wop masterpiece. Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" and Ray Charles' "I Got a Woman" reveal Elvis covering songs by iconic Black artists, breaking the segregation of American popular music. "Money Honey" channels Clyde McPhatter's R&B influence, while "I'm Counting on You" demonstrates his emotional range. Producer Steve Sholes oversaw the sessions with Scotty Moore, Bill Black, D.J. Fontana, and The Jordanaires.
This black vinyl LP features the legendary pink and green cover with photographer William V. "Red" Robertson's image of Elvis performing in Tampa, Florida on July 31, 1955. The cover is ranked number 40 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Album Covers. Released March 23, 1956, Elvis Presley redefined popular music and proved rock and roll was more than a fad.
