Oakland's funk-hip-hop pioneers delivered a concept album about government-issued pleasure pills and changed the game forever. Released March 20, 1990, Sex Packets was certified Platinum by the RIAA and reached number 24 on the Billboard 200 and number 8 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. "The Humpty Dance" became a cultural phenomenon, hitting number 11 on the pop charts, number 7 on R&B, and number 1 on the Billboard Rap Singles chart. The album was selected for The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums and the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
Led by Shock G and his alter ego Humpty Hump, the group blended P-Funk, jazz piano, and satirical social commentary into something completely original. "The Humpty Dance" remains instantly recognizable with its nose-twitching hook and drum break, while "Doowutchyalike" channels party energy through layers of funk. The concept tracks build a narrative around G.S.R.A. pills, with "Freaks Of The Industry" and the title track pushing boundaries with humor and swagger. "Underwater Rimes" showcases the group's production innovation, and "The New Jazz (One)" demonstrates their musical range. Shock G handled production, piano, and multiple vocal personas throughout.
This 35th anniversary deluxe edition 2LP edition of Sex Packets features 180g light blue and black splatter colored vinyl with a pop-up gatefold jacket that reveals a three-dimensional recording studio, photo booklet, and three bonus tracks including "A Tribute to the Early Days" and "The Humpty Dance (Humpstrumental Mix)." The package celebrates Digital Underground's revolutionary fusion of Parliament-Funkadelic aesthetics with hip-hop innovation that influenced a generation.
