Devo introduced their theory of de-evolution through sharp guitars, synthesizers, and deliberately stiff rhythms on Q. Are We Not Men? A. We Are Devo!. Produced by Brian Eno, the Akron band's debut combines punk energy with unusual song structures and deadpan humor. Mark Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale trade vocal parts while the guitars, bass, and drums repeatedly stop, restart, or change direction. This Rocktober pressing comes on Golfball White vinyl.
"Uncontrollable Urge" opens with shouted vocals and guitar figures, setting the pace before Devo dismantle the Rolling Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" with a mechanical beat and unusual phrasing. "Praying Hands" pairs a repeating guitar pattern with a chant-like refrain. "Space Junk" turns a news-inspired disaster into a song, while "Jocko Homo" uses its call-and-response chorus to introduce the band's de-evolution slogan. "Gut Feeling" begins with a gradual instrumental build before the vocals arrive.
Brian Eno produced the album, with sessions at Conny Plank's studio in Germany. Devo's lyrics question conformity, consumer habits, and the assumption that society is always progressing. The version of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" changes the rhythm and vocal delivery of the original. The limited Rocktober edition was offered to independent record shops on Golfball White vinyl.

"Mongoloid" tells a satirical story over a repeating bass figure, and "Come Back Jonee" draws on early rock and roll rhythms. The brief "Sloppy (I Saw My Baby Gettin')" and closing "Shrivel-Up" carry Devo's ironic approach through the second side.
